Western costumes are incredibly easy to find and you don’t even need to look in costume shops for most of the parts.
If you live in a place that has a western wear store or a boot store, you’re in luck. And even if you don’t, the main pieces of western costumes are fairly commonplace.
A good, sturdy pair of blue jeans are the best place to start and it’s best if they look beat up, worn, torn, and even a bit dusty.
The ladies can also opt for a denim skirt with a ragged hem. Top it off with a paisley or plaid shirt, which you can buy at any department store, and a vest or laced bodice.
And of course no western costume would be complete without the right pair of cowboy boots.
In addition to boots, the next most well known part of western costumes is the cowboy hat.
The bigger the hat, the better the man, and if you’re planning on being a honorable cowhand, a dust-colored cowboy hat would be the perfect choice.
Bandannas are also a common part of most western costumes and they come in an endless array of sizes and colors.
You can’t go wrong with a red bandanna, since that’s the most common color.
Every good cowboy or cowgirl should also come equipped with a strong lasso and a shiny pair of spurs.
It’s easy enough to tie together your own lasso with rope from a building supply store, and spurs can be found in western stores or costume shops.
There are a few variations on the standard western costume if you are interested in being more inventive and unique.
Dress yourself up in a black vest, huge black cowboy hat and a black bandanna tied over your mouth and nose, and you will be the perfect bandit or cattle rustler.
If you want to be the good guy, equip yourself with a pair of pistols in hip holsters and pin a tin star on your vest and be ready to stand up for the law as the town sheriff.
Ladies can embellish their western costumes with a fringed leather vest and a rifle to pay homage to Annie Oakley, one of the greatest gunslingers in the wild west.
Western costumes are as American as Elvis and apple pie, and are a great option for your next rodeo or costume party.
In very little time and with a small amount of money, you can put together a realistic and unique western costume that will have everybody thinking you were born on the plains.
Ride ‘em, cowboys and cowgirls!
